Governor of Louisiana, 1940-1944.

Sam Houston Jones was born in Merryville, Louisiana; he married Louise Gambrell Boyer in 1934 and had 4 children. He attended Louisiana State University Law School and was admitted to the Louisiana Bar Association in 1922. He practiced law in DeRidder, Louisiana, served as assistant district attorney of the 14th Judicial district, 1925-1934, and practiced law in Lake Charles, 1934-1940. In 1940 he was elected governor of Louisiana as a reform candidate. Earl K. Long defeated Jones in the 1948 gubernatorial campaign. Vance Gabriel Plauche (1897-1976), an attorney and politician, was Jones' campaign manager. G. T. Owens was Jones' executive secretary.
