Biographical History
The Upson family is comprised of Lauren Upson, his son Lauren Asahel, and his three brothers James, Charles, and Gad Ely. The family was originally from Connecticut but all but Charles moved west to California and Montana in the 1850s. Charles Upson lived in Michigan and Washington D.C. and was a state senator for Michigan beginning in 1855 and a congressman in 1863. Gad Ely Upson was the Indian Agent at Fort Benton, Montana. The family mined in California and owned a tin mill and freight business in Montana. The Upson family is the subject of the book The western odyssey of nine Connecticut brothers by Helen Rena Upson.
