Biographical History

Mildred Bailey Carpenter is the daughter of the artist William Bailey, who produced sculpture for St. Louis City Hall and Union Station. She attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1915. She married the artist Fred Green Carpenter in 1914. He had studied under Richard Miller in Paris for several years. She taught portraiture and figure drawing at the Art School of Washington University, where her husband also taught. During WWI Mildred drew portraits of soldiers in service hospitals for the U.S.O. sketching program. Throughout her career she participated in many exhibitions and received numerous awards.

From the description of Mildred B. Carpenter Scrapbook. Compiled by Mildred Carpenter primarily to document her visit to the home of the artist Richard Miller and his wife in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the summer of 1931. (Saint Louis Art Museum). WorldCat record id: 82633988
