Grandfather of J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913).
Born in 1780, Joseph Morgan worked as a schoolteacher and farmer in West Springfield, Mass. before moving to Hartford, Conn. in 1817. There he purchased the Exchange Coffee House, leased the City Hotel, invested in land, and was one of the founders of Aetna Fire Insurance Company. He married Sally Spencer in 1807; the couple had three children: Mary, Lucy, and Junius.
