Iowa Press Women was established in 1937 with seven women who were already affiliated with the National Federation of Press Women present at the first meeting. The group's purpose was to foster communication among and promote the interests of women journalists. In the beginning, the majority of the members were either editors or associate editors at their respective publications. Membership contined to grow over the years with a high of 112 in 1976.
