Eldest son of John Winthrop, first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was an avid chemist, practical scientist, and physician. Also governor of Connecticutt colony.
Governor of Connecticut; eldest son of John Winthrop (1588-1649), first governor of Massachusetts Bay; after coming to America in 1631 spent time in Massachusetts where set up iron works at Lynn; after father's death became permanent resident of Connecticut; one of founders of New London; also well known physician, scientist, merchant, and farmer; lived in Winthrop's Neck area of New London County.
Owner of iron works in Massachusetts and governor of the colony of Connecticut; known as John Winthrop, Jr.
First governor of Connecticut.
Winthrop was the eldest child of John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and was himself governor of Connecticut from 1659 to 1676. He studied law in England and was a founding fellow of the Royal Society of London. He was well versed in medicine and had a library of more than 1,000 volumes.
