Biographical History
William R. McVean, of Wheatland, Monroe County, New York, sailed to California in 1851 with his friend Willim Roberts. Forming the Rochester Mining Company they prospected for gold along the Yuba River, near Marysville, Yuba County. In 1852 McVean worked on a government ranch in San Francisco and various ranches in the Napa Valley. He finally became manager of Arguello Park, a ranch north of San Francisco owned by Isaih Churchill Woods. McVean returned home in 1855, married and settled in Wheatland.
