Biographical History
Lettie Marie Coleman, an African American born in Montpelier, Va., attended Hampton Institute Academy in Hampton, Va. Earning degrees at Dana College (now Rutgers University), Newark, N.J., and from the School of Social Service at Fordham University, New York City, she pursued a career in social work and eventually founded the Department of Social Work at Virginia Union University in Richmond. She married Thomas D. Madison (d. 1964) in the 1930s.
