Begun in 1936 to celebrate springtime; in 1968 Women's Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta began to coordinate the festival.
The Atlanta Dogwood Festival was started in 1936, during the depression, by Atlanta Mayor James L. Key.
The purpose was to celebrate springtime through many events. The Dogwood Festival is now considered to be a major tourist attraction as well as a promotion of the planting of dogwood trees.
