Bermingham, John R.

Colo. State Senator (1965-1973), John Bermingham (Republican-Denver) was born in Chicago, Ill. He attended Yale (1944) before graduating from Columbia Law School (1949). Bermingham moved to Denver in 1953 and ran for the Colo. State Legislature two times before being elected in 1964, later reelected in 1968 and 1972. He was the lead sponsor for a bill with State Rep. Richard Lamm to liberalize Colorado's abortion law (1967). In 1970, Bermingham was also the chief Senate sponsor when the legislature passed the Air Pollution Control Act. In 1973, he left the Senate to become the Colo. State Governor, John Vanderhoof's Assistant for Environmental Affairs, later Bermingham became Chair of the Colo. Land Use Commission (1975), and Regional Rep. for the U.S. Secretary of Commerce (1976) before returing to private practice. He has been a board member of the Rocky Mountain Center of the Environment (1978), and President for the Colo. Population Coalition.
