Biographical History
Rose Haas Alschuler (1887-1979) was a Chicago educator, author, and philanthropist. The founder of the second U.S. public school nursery in Chicago in 1922, Alschuler co-authored the "Chicago Plan" which provided a structure for such public nurseries nationally. She served as an administrator of various federal nursery programs in the 1930s and 1940s. Her best known book "Painting and Personality" (1947) established guidelines for educators to view the art work of young children as a key to their mental health. Rose Haas Alschuler's philanthropic interests included fundraising for Israel, public art endowments, and education-related funds.
