Biographical History
Reporter and columnist Stanton Delaplane was born in 1907 in Chicago. He worked for various newspapers before joining the San Francisco Chronicle in 1936. Delaplane won a Pulitzer Prize in 1941 for his coverage of a secession attempt of 5 northern California and several southern Oregon counties into a separate state called Jefferson. He served as Lt. Commdr. for U.S.M.S. Maritime Commission during World War II,and beginning in 1944 as a war correspondent for the Chronicle. Delaplane then spent the years until his death in 1988 writing a daily column for the Chronicle entitled Postcards, a weekly column called Around the World with Delaplane, and several travel books. He also introduced Irish Coffee to the United States, for which the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco will be eternally grateful.
