Biographical History

Evert Eugene Mapes was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on April 14, 1917, the son of Leo Evert and Ruth Brown Mapes. In 1941, he married Doris Genevieve Williamson of Russellville. They had one daughter, Eugenia Kay Mapes Caffey. Mapes graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1934 and from Fort Smith Junior College in 1936. He then attended the University of Arkansas, earning a degree in accounting in 1938. Mapes was employed as cashier and accountant with the American Security Company in Little Rock until 1940, when he became an auditor with the United States Department of Agriculture. He transferred to the Treasury Department in 1942 as Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue. Mapes joined the United States Army in 1942, but received a medical discharge a year later. He, then, returned to the Treasury Department, where he was employed until 1951, at which time he started his own accounting firm. He retired in 1982 because of failing health. Mapes served the State of Arkansas in several capacities and was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations. In 1967-68, he served on Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's Arkansas Environmental Efficiency Study Commission. Beginning in 1968, he sat on the Board of Accountancy, serving as its president in 1971. In 1963, Mapes was general chairman of the Southern Conference of CPA's. He also served as treasurer of Mid-Southern Watercolorists, which his wife co-founded, for many years. Mapes had a lifelong interest in history, genealogy, and writing. He authored five books on Mapes family history. He compiled the book Calendar in America, which coverts dates from the Gregorian calendar to the corresponding dates on the Julian calendar, to assist himself in his own genealogical research. He also wrote a series of tax articles for the Arkansas Gazette in 1955-56, under the pen name U.R. Caught. Evert Eugene Mapes died in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 13, 1983.
