American drama critic.
Massachusetts native William Winter graduated from Harvard law school, but began his career as a journalist. He wrote for numerous journals before securing a position as drama critic at the New York Tribune. In addition to being one of the most influential critics of his day, he published theatre-related prose, several books of poetry, and also served as editor for several projects.

Beginning in 1865, Winter served as drama critic for the New York Tribune for forty-four years. Some of his books are Life and Art of Edwin Booth, Shakespeare on the Stage, and Poems of William Winter.
