Massachusetts native William Winter graduated from Harvard law school, but began his career as a journalist. He wrote for numerous journals before securing a position as drama critic at the New York Tribune. In addition to being one of the most influential critics of his day, he published theatre-related prose, several books of poetry, and also served as editor for several projects.

William Winter (1836-1917) was a drama critic, stage historian, poet, and essayist. He graduated from Harvard in 1857 and became a reviewer for the Boston Transcript. Beginning in 1865, Winter served as drama critic for the New York Tribune for forty-four years. Some of his books are Life and Art of Edwin Booth, Shakespeare on the Stage, and Poems of William Winter.

William Winter graduated from Harvard law school, but moved to New York to become a writer. After working for various newspapers, he became drama critic for the Tribune, where he was popular, respected, and influential. He also published poetry, travelogues, stage biographies, and essays, and edited collections of poems and memoirs. He had a special interest in Shakespeare.
