Native of Spartanburg, S.C.; in 1906, Aleta Geddes married lawyer, politician and diplomat Lewis Wardlaw Haskell (b. 1868), a native of Arkansas, and son of Langdon Cheves Haskell and Ella Coulter Wardlaw Haskell, both natives of S.C.; L.W. Haskell served in the S.C. House of Representatives, 1902-1906, and as U.S. Consul in: Salina Cruz (Mexico), 1910-1912; Hull (England), 1912-1913; Belgrade (Yugoslavia), 1913-1915; Geneva (Switzerland), 1915-1924; Algiers (Algeria), 1926; and as U.S. Consul General in Zurich (Switzerland), 1929-1932.
