Biographical History

Clara Dutton Noyes (b. Oct. 1869, Port Deposit, Md.-d. June 3, 1936, Washington, D.C.) was a nurse with the American Red Cross. In 1896, she graduated from Johns Hopkins Training School for Nursing. Beginning in 1897, she worked as the superintendent of the training school at New England Hospital for Women and Children. In 1901, she became the superintendent of St. Luke's Hospital Training School for Nurses in New Bedford, Massachusetts. From 1910 to 1916, Noyes served as the superintendent of Bellevue and the Allied Training Schools in New York, New York. In 1916, she took charge of the Bureau of Field Nursing at the national headquarters of the American Red Cross. From 1919 to 1936, she served as the National Director of the American Red Cross Nursing Service. Noyes died on June 3, 1936, of a heart attack while driving to work at the American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C.
