Kansas State Reception and Diagnostic Center.

The Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center opened in Topeka in 1961. It was created to evaluate all incoming offenders and develop individualized rehabilitation and treatment programs. The State Reception and Diagnostic Center (SRDC) was administratively combined in 1990 with three other facilities and collectively became known as the Topeka Correctional Facility. These other facilities were the Correctional-Vocational Training Center, opened in 1975; the Work Release Center, which operated from 1976 until 1994; and the Pre-Release Center, which opened in 1984 on the grounds of the Topeka State Hospital. In 2001, the Topeka Correctional Facility became an all-female facility, the only such facility in the state of Kansas. That same year, the Reception and Diagnostic Unit for male offenders moved to the El Dorado Correctional Facility.
