Biographical History
Walter Eugene "Gene" Guess was born in Mississippi. He graduated from the College of William and Mary (1955) and received a law degree from the University of Virginia (1959). Gene Guess married Carolyn Suber in 1957; they moved to Alaska in 1959. He was admitted to the Alaska Bar in 1960 and in 1961 he formed the law firm of Ely and Guess with Bob Ely. They were later joined by Joseph Rudd. Guess was president of the firm until his death. He became involved in politics.
In 1964, he was elected to the first of four successive terms in the Alaska House of Representatives. He was Speaker of the House (1970-1972). He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate (1972, 1974). Gene Guess was a member various political, business, and social organizations. He died in Juneau in 1975.
