Biographical History
In 1793, Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) began a paper mill on the Blackstone River in the south part of Worcester. He sold the mill in 1798 to Caleb Burbank (1761-1849) and his brother, Elijah Burbank (1762-1847), from Millbury, Mass. In 1834, Elijah Burbank sold the mill to a group of Worcester businessmen who formed the Quinsigamond Paper Mills Company. Among the directors of the company were Isaac Goddard (1800- ), Charles Allen (1797-1869), and William Lincoln (1801-1843). The company added new machinery and was able to increase the production of the mill. About 1840, the mill was sold to Ichabod Washburn (1798-1868), who converted it into a wire factory. The site later became the South Works of Washburn and Moen Company.
