Stanley Albert Wolpert was born on Dec. 23, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY; BA, City College of NY, 1953; AM (1955) and Ph. D (1959), Univ. of PA; instructor (1959-60), asst. professor (1960-3), assoc. professor (1963-6), and in 1967 professor of history, UCLA; also served, beginning in 1968, as department chair; won Distinguished Teaching Award, UCLA, 1975; published books include Aboard the flying swan (1954), Tilak and Gokhale : revolution and reform in the making of modern India (1962), Nine hours to Rama (1962), India (1965), Morley and India, 1906-1910 (1967), The expedition (1968), An error of judgment (1970), A new history of India (1976), Roots of confrontation in South Asia : Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and the Superpowers (1982), Jinnah of Pakistan : a life (1984), and Nehru : a tryst with destiny (1996).
