Biographical History

The Seeley family founders in the area were Jonathan and Rhoda Seeley. Jonathan Seeley (1793-1868) married Rhoda Kelly (1798-1877). They were born in Danby, Vt., but settled in Middlebury where they raised many of their eight children, some of whom died in infancy or very young. Few of their issue married and had children, but Smith K. Seeley married twice, and son John married Delia Goodrich. The family genealogy shows the lines of the extended family and provides a picture of the early Seeleys and their neighbors. The area of Seeley land and farm became known as Farmingdale due to a novel published in 1854 by Julia Ripley Dorr depicting the area and its residents under that pseudonym. Today the local cemetary is known as Farmingdale Cemetery, and is the resting place of many Seeleys, Goodrichs, Chipmans, and Smalleys.
