Biographical History

Doctor and Holocaust survivor.

Mejer Ginzburg was born on December 13, 1906 in Varsovie, Poland. In 1938 He began practicing medicine in Lithuania. While living in Valkinikai, Lithuania, he continued to practice medicine while under Russian occupation from June 1940 to June 1941. Ginzburg concealed himself from the German occupation in Vilno, Lithuania from June 1941 to September 1941. Upon his discovery, the Germans interned him in the ghetto of Vilno. In September of 1943, he was transported to a Jewish work camp in Estonia where he escaped while on work duty in the forest outside the camp. He hid in the forests of Estonia and in a peasant's cellar for over a year until he discovered the Russians had taken back Vilno in August of 1944. He returned to the ghetto to look for his family, which he found no traces of. From December of 1945 to July of 1948 he worked for the Jewish Medical Association in multiple United States occupied zones in Germany. He married Jehudit Reiman on October 6, 1946. He began applying for a United States refugee visa in 1948 but had to wait until after 1950 due to the waiting list for Polish refugee visas. No information after 1950 is available for either Jehudit or Mejer Ginzburg.
