Biographical History

Beck (1891-1977) was born in Hickman (Neb.), the son of Cornelius Porter and Louisa (Theade) Beck. He attended several colleges, earning a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Nebraska, a second master's degree from Harvard, and a Ph. D. from the George Peabody College. He worked as a teacher and educator, and in the English Dept. at Central Michigan University (CMU), 1928-1958. He was a member of a musical group that sang lumberjack songs.
