Biographical History

Roland A. Campbell (b. 1917, Persia, Iowa), U.S. Air Force officer, enlisted in the Washington State National Guard in 1939 and was called to active duty as an aviation cadet, receiving his pilot wings and commission as 2nd Lieutenant in April 1940. In 1944 he became commander, 4th Reconnaissance Squadron, Pacific Theater of Operations. There he completed 32 B-24 combat missions in air operations against Borneo, Luzon, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. General Campbell assumed command of the 344th Bombardment Squadron in 1950, and completed 50 combat missions during the Korean War. In the 1950s and 1960s, he served in a number of positions, including commander, of the 92nd and 93rd Bombardment Wings, 4039th Strategic Wing, and 72nd Bombardment Wing. In 1965 General Campbell was assigned to Strategic Air Command Headquarters, and later became chief of staff of Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hawaii. This decorated officer is rated a command pilot with more than 6700 flying hours. In 1971 he took command of the 21st Air Force, Military Airlift Command, McGuire Air Force Base. He retired in March 1973.
