Biographical History
Educator, theologian, philosopher, personalist.
Born in Grandmeadow, Minnesota, of pure Norwegian stock, son of Rev. Asle Knudsen (one of the founders of the Norwegian-Danish Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church) and Synnøve T. (Susan Fosse) Knudsen. He attended the University of Minnesota (B.A. 1893), and Boston University (S.T.B. 1896, Ph.D. 1900), with studies in Jena and Berlin in 1897-98. He taught at Denver University (1898-1900), Baker University (1900-1902), and Allegheny College (1902-1906) before coming to Boston University where he taught from 1906-1943. He served as Dean of the School of Theology (1926-1938). His early career focused on the Old Testament, but in 1921 he moved to Systematic Theology, having briefly been considered to replace Borden Parker Bowne upon his death in 1910. Published books include: Present Tendencies in Religious Thought (1924), The Philosophy of Personalism (1927), The Doctrine of God (1930), The Doctrine of Redemption (1933), The Validity of Religious Experience (1937), The Principles of Christian Ethics (1943), The Philosophy of War and Peace (1947), and Basic Issues in Christian Thought. Issues in Christian Thought (1950).
