Biographical History

Charles Harris (Doc) Kuhn was born in Prairie City IL on March 28,1892. He sold his first cartoon at the age of 12. He attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and served in the Navy during World War I. After the war, he worked at Publishers Feature Bureau in Chicago and then at the Rocky Mountain news in Denver before joining the Indianapolis news as editorial cartoonist in 1922. Kuhn authored Boy and girl cartoonist: a complete course in cartooning, published by Saalfield Publishing Company in 1936, and Kuhn course in cartooning; America's number one cartoon course, published in 1944. In 1947 Kuhn resigned from his post at the Indianapolis news to devote all his time to local syndication of Grandma and a short-lived Sunday comic panel titled Sparks of life. His comic strip Grandma debuted in national syndication on June 28, 1948. Kuhn died January 16, 1989.

Charles Harris Kuhn (1892-1989) was an American cartoonist and creator of the comic strip Grandma .

Born in 1892 in Prairie City, Illinois, Kuhn attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts before serving in the Navy during World War I. He spent most of his career primarily as an editorial cartoonist, starting his career with the Rocky Mountain News, and spending the bulk of it with the Indianapolis News . In 1947, Kuhn launched his own comic strip feature, Grandma, with the Richardson syndicate. King Features picked-up the strip the following year, and altogether Grandma ran some twenty-two years, until Kuhn's retirement in 1969.
