Biographical History

Zina Woodhouse, of Lawrenceville, Tioga County, Pa., enlisted 22 August 1862 in Company D, the 141st New York Infantry Regiment, in Elmira, New York. He served as a private in the Union Army throughout the U.S. Civil War, mostly as a drummer but also detailed to the field hospital near Chattanooga, 30 Oct.-26 Nov. 1863. The 141st left Elmira on 15 September 1862 for Maryland where they defended Washington, D.C., then traveled to Arlington Heights, Va., Suffolk, Va., Fortress Monroe, to the Pamunkey River to build fortifications, then to Williamsburg. They left Va. for Frederick City, Md., and encamped at Warrington Junction for drilling. Under the Army of the Cumberland, they traveled by railroad to Bridgeport, Ala., and fought at the Battle of Wauhatchie five miles from Chattanooga, Tenn., at the base of Lookout Mountain, where they remained until 24 Jan. 1864. They removed to Shell Mound for more picket duty and drilling until 2 May. They fought in the Battles of Ringgold, Resaca, Dallas, Pine Mountain, and Peach-Tree Creek, opening the siege of Atlanta. As part of Sherman's March to the Sea, the 141st arrived in Savannah, then pushed north, fighting at Averysboro and Bentonville, N.C. On 24 May 1865 they participated in the great review in Washington, D.C. then mustered out 8 June 1865.
