Charles Alderson Janeway (1909-1981) (Johns Hopkins, M.D. 1934) was Thomas Morgan Rotch Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital from 1946 to 1974. During this time Children's Hospital was the largest academic pediatric service in the U.S., and Janeway was instrumental in developing its present tertiary care system. He was active in international pediatric education, consulting, and helping to establish medical schools in Iran, India, and the Cameroons. His research interests included study of sulfonamides, blood proteins, mechanisms of allergy, use of gamma globulin antibodies in treatment of measles and prevention of hepatitis, and a range of immunodeficiency diseases.
