Biographical History

Julius Klein (1869-1928), a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman was born in Legenye-Michalyi, Slovakia, Austria-Hungary, and emigrated to the United States in 1885. He lived successively in Chicago, Illinois; Toledo, Ohio; and the Bronx, New York City, before settling in Cleveland in 1900. In 1900, Julius Klein and Rebecca Korach (Klein's future mother-in-law) purchased a skirt manufacturing company at 76-78 Bank Street, formerly known as Goodman and Korach Co. In this new company, known as Julius Klein and Co., Edward S. Korach was authorized to act for Rebecca Korach in all business matters. The company closed within a few years. In 1906, Klein was employed by Korach Sonnenfield Co., a cloak manufacturing company which, in 1907, became the Korach-Ecker Co. This company was located at 717 Lakeside Avenue. In 1913 Klein opened Klein's Economy Store which sold "Ladies' High Grade Ready to Wear Apparel" at 3755 Woodland Avenue. Prior to this date he may have been the co-owner of a business, Economy Skirt Manufacturing Company, at this same location. Following Julius Klein's death, his son Alwyn (1902-1952) continued the business, relocating it in 1933 to 2585 East 55th Street. Following Alwyn's death his wife Beatrice (1903-1986) operated the business until its liquidation in 1959.
