Smith was a Mormon pioneer, an employee of the Mormon Church in the historian's office and the Endowment House, and ran a diary business. Smith was a nephew of the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), was orphaned at age six, was a polygamist, served on three missions for the Mormon church, and was active in politics and public affairs.
