Beagle Expedition (1831-1836)

The second voyage of HMS Beagle took place December 27, 1831 through October 2, 1836. This survey expedition was under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. FitzRoy brought on young geologist, Charles Darwin. This is the voyage where Darwin made a name for himself with his geological research. The main purpose of the expedition was to conduct a hydrographic survey of the coasts of the southern part of South America. It was a continuation and correction of the work of previous surveys, in order to produce accurate nautical charts showing navigational and sea depth information for the navy and for commerce. The crew also collected fossils.
