Hartshorn Memorial College was founded in the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., with 58 students on November 1883; est. by the Rev. J.C. Hartshorn, of Providence, R.I., in memory of his wife, to provide a Christian education to young Negro women; merged with Virginia Union University in 1932.
