Biographical History
The Mental Health Association of New York State (MHANYS) and its predecessor organizations have all promoted mental health and sought to improve the care and treatment of persons with mental disabilities in New York State. MHANYS's predecessors include the State Charities Aid Association of New York State (SCAA), founded in 1872 in New York City and now the Albany, N.Y.-based Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, and the New York State Society for Mental Health (NYSSMH), founded in Albany in 1951 as part of the SCAA. In 1960, MHANYS (originally called the New York State Association for Mental Health, Inc.) was founded as the successor to the NYSSMH. With the exception of the years 1970-1980, when its main office was located in New York City, MHANYS has been based in Albany, N.Y.
