He was an editorial writer for the "Richmond Times-Dispatch," 1909-10, 1913-15; editor, the "Richmond News Leader," 1915-1949. He was the author of a 4-volume biography of Robert E. Lee for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1934. He completed 5 volumes of a projected 8-volume biography of George Washington before his death in 1953.
