Biographical History

Born in New York City, 15 Aug. 1814. Worked at the Manhattan Iron Works, where he learned the trades of millwright and machinist. Moved to North Carolina and superintended the erection of large cotton mills. In 1845, settled in Rochester as a member of the firm Stoddard, Freeman & Co., paper manufacturers and owners of the lower falls mills. Contractors Battin, Duncan & Co. brought him to Buffalo to aid in construction of the Buffalo water works, where he remained as superintendent for some years. He then established his own business as a water works contractor, and built works in various cities, including Rochester, Memphis, Tenn., and Galveston, Texas.
