Biographical History
Edwin Porcher joined the H.M.S. Fly in 1842, for a four-year voyage to Australia and the adjoining islands. In 1846 he served aboard the steam frigate Sidon, then on the Cleopatra in 1849. After several other tours he joined the Hibernia in 1857, on a special assignment in the Middle East for the British Government. He later published a history of the discoveries made at Cyrene during this expedition. In 1865 he was in command of the H.M.S. Sparrowhawk, stationed in British Columbia, where he remained until 1868. Here he composed many examples of his topographical artistry. After 25 years of naval service, he retired in 1872 and toured the continent until his death in Germany in 1878.
British naval officer who entered the service in 1837, was appointed captain in 1868, retired in 1872, and died in Germany in 1878. Porcher served on various ships on voyages to Australia, the Orient, and the Middle East, where he prepared drawings for the archeologist Dr. Nathan Davis on an assignment for the British Government. Some of those drawings were published in Davis's work Carthage and Her Remains (1861).
