Biographical History
Scholar of medieval English literary history and language who taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1912 to 1961. He is known for his scholarship in the different branches of English philology, and especially for his History of the English language (first published in 1935) and his contributions on the Middle English period to the Literary history of England (published 1948). Baugh also wrote a number of articles on and editions of Chaucer, edited a version of the Ancren riwle (or Anchoresses' rule), and composed a manual on writing for college students (two partial versions of which can be found in the research materials on teaching). He taught courses on Chaucer, Middle English, and English methods, and served on the boards of the Modern Language Association, the Medieval Academy of America, the Modern Humanities Research Association and the International Federation of Modern Languages and Literature. He died in 1981.
