Biographical History
The Society was founded in 1878 and organized with Dr. Charles Turpin as president. Earlier attempts had been made to organize the medical profession in New Orleans, but this society, in continuous affiliation with the state and national associations, dates to 1878. In the early years, the members met once a month in a small room of the medical college. The Medical Library Association turned over its books to the society in 1890. By the end of 1901, the society had 183 members and its library consisted of over 3,000 volumes. Further information about the history of the organization, see their web site (2011: http://www.opms.org/images/stories/OPMS-History-Profile.pdf)
