American poet, educator, and author. Winner of Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards for poetry (1941, 1942), graduate of the University of Michigan (1944), and profesor at Fisk University until 1969, then at the University of Michigan until his retirement.
Robert E. Hayden was born Asa Bundy Sheffey, 4 August 1913, in Detroit, and died 25 February 1980, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hayden taught English at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1944-1946, Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn., 1946-1969, and University of Michigan, 1969-1980. He was the first black poet to be chosen as consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress, 1976-1978.
