Biographical History

Plantation owner of Saint Bartholomew Parish (Colleton District, S.C.). A native of Great Britain, David Campbell served in the 63rd British Regiment during the American Revolution. After the war he settled in South Carolina and in 1784 married Elizabeth Smith, niece of William Loughton Smith (1758-1812), a Charleston, S.C. attorney, plantation owner, politician, and U.S. diplomat. Campbell began to act as William Loughton Smith's agent around 1788, handling his financial and business affairs. By 1804 Smith's finances were in poor straits due to unfortunate investments made by Campbell.
