Biographical History
Samuel Havermale was born on 15 Oct. 1824 in Sharpsburg, Md. Over the next twenty years his family moved westward, first to Ohio, then Illinois, where, in 1849, he was licensed as a minister in the Methodist Church. In Sept. 1873, Havermale was transferred to the Columbia River conference and assigned the pastorate in Walla Walla, Washington Territory. The following year he was made presiding elder, and his duties called him to all parts of eastern Washington, Oregon, and parts of Idaho. In Nov. of 1875, during the course of his ministerial travels, he happened upon the village of Spokane Falls, then just two years old. Havermale liked the location and subsequently moved his family from Walla Walla to Spokane Falls, where he remained until 1887. For health reasons he moved to San Diego, Calif., but returned to Spokane in 1898, where he died in 1904.
