Yates, Sidney Richard, 1909-

Sidney R. Yates was born on August 27, 1909 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Lake View High School in Chicago, Illinois in 1928; received a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1931; and received a J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1933. He worked as an attorney in private practice from 1933 to 1935; from 1935 to 1937 he was assistant attorney for the Illinois state bank receiver; and from 1937 to 1940 he was assistant attorney general attached to the Illinois Commerce Commission as traction attorney. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. Yates was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Ninth Congressional District of Illinois, and served from 1949 to 1963. He was a 1962 Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Illinois, but was defeated by incumbent Republican Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. From 1963 to 1964, he served as U.S. Representative to the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador. In 1964, he was once again elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Ninth Congressional District of Illinois, and served in the 89th to the 105th Congresses, from 1965 to 1998. He did not seek reelection, and retired from public service. He died on October 5, 2000, in Washington, D.C.
