Biographical History

Wells Wintemute Coates (1895-1958) was born in Tokyo, Japan. B.S., Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, 1921; Ph.D., Engineering, University of London, 1924. In the office of Adams and Thompson, London, 1924. Founder, with Maxwell Fry, of the English Modern Architecture Research Group, 1933. In private practice, London, 1929-1939, 1945-1952, 1956-1958. In partnership with Patrick Gwynne; with Jacqueline Tyrwhitt; and with Michael Lyell. Major works include Lawn Road Flats, Hampstead, London, 1933; Embassy Court Flats, Brighton, 1934; Flats at 10 Palace Gate, Kensington, London, 1937. In Canada, architect and planner for Iroquois New Town, Ontario, 1952-1954; Toronto Island Development Plan (with J.B. Parkin), 1954; and Project 58 (flats), Vancouver (with A. Erickson, G. Massey, P. Oberlander, and E.J. Watkins), 1957.
