Biographical History

The New Alchemy Institute was founded in 1969 by John Todd, Nancy Jack Todd, and William McLarney. In its early years, the focus of the Institute was on ecological design, but later expanded to include agriculture, aquaculture and bioshelters. After 1984, New Alchemy's approach moved toward practical application of research results. Though the 1980s were a productive period for New Alchemy, by 1990, a combination of factors threatened the Institute's continued existence. Despite program cutbacks, layoffs, and a public appeal for donations, the Institute could not continue, and by 1992 it had dissolved.

For further information on the Institute's history, see the files of news articles in boxes 30 and 31. A description of the Institute's early work can be found in John Todd's book Tomorrow is Our Permanent Address, available in the Special Collections Department, call number TH4812.T62 1980.
