Georges Schreiber was born April 25, 1904, in Brussels, Belgium. He studied art in Berlin, London, Florence, and Paris, and came to the United States at the age of 24. He worked as a cartoonist and painter, and became known as one of the best interpreters of the American scene, noted for the lifelike realism of his portraits. He received several honors for his work, and had exhibitions in many galleries in the United States and abroad. Throughout his career, he also worked as an illustrator for both magazines and books. He 1947 he illustrated his first book for children, Bambino the Clown, which received a Caldecott Honor citation. He also illustrated books by such well-known authors as Claire Huchet Bishop and Alice Dalgliesh, plus a second 'Bambino' book. He died in 1977.
