Biographical History
John Henry Neville was born November 16, 1827 in Christian County, Kentucky. From 1859 to 1865 he was connected with Kentucky University in Harrodsburg, Kentucky which moved to Lexington and became Transylvania University after the Civil War. In 1880 he became professor of Greek and Latin at State College of Kentucky, which ultimately became the University of Kentucky. He became a widely distinguished scholar of Greek and Latin and was well known as "the possessor of probably more universal information than any man in the community, if not in the State."
Professor Neville became Dean of the Department of Latin and Greek and eventually had enough interest in student affairs to become Vice-President of the University. He was widely loved and his death came as a shock to faculty, friends, and the student body who did not know that he had heart disease. Professor Neville passed away on September 28, 1908 at the age of 80.
