Biographical History

Born July 31, 1889, in Chicago, IL; died September 4, 1973, Clarkson, MI. Psychologist and teacher. Charles I. Doyle, S.J., was one of five children of James Doyle and Rose Donnelly. He attended St. Jarlath Parish School, then St. Ignatius High School, from which he graduated in 1906. Following three years of work at United States Steel, he entered the Society of Jesus at Florrisaant, MO, in 1910. Doyle received his bachelor's degree and master's degree from Gonzaga University in 1918 and 1919, respectively, and the studied in Belguim prior to being ordained in 1924. He taught at St. Mary's College in Kansas, Marquette University, Enghein, Belguim, and St. Louis University before serving as the associate editor for America from 1927 to 1831. He received his doctorate in Psychology from St. Louis University in 1933 and joined the faculty of Loyola University Chicago. At Loyola he was chair of the Psychology department from 1934 to 1945, and in 1941 founded the Child Guidance Center, where he served as director until 1963.
