Biographical History
The Perkins family resided in Unity, New Hampshire. The principle figure of the family papers was Amos Perkins, born in 1790 and died in 1885 at the age of 95. He was a lifelong resident of Unity. Amos Perkins was a farmer by trade, but he also worked as a secretary and president of Unity Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Over the years he held several public offices and received a number of political appointments. Perkins served as justice of the peace, town selectman, and treasurer in Unity, N.H., and he was a Major in the New Hampshire state militia. He worked on the Executive Council of Governor John H. Steele and in 1832 acted as the Treasurer of Sullivan county. The Collection also includes information pertaining to other members of the Perkins family, among these are: Betsey Moody Perkins (1790-1853), Amos's wife; Amos's brother, Joseph (b.1788), an engraver who worked in Philadelphia and New York; and Amos and Betsey's children, Joseph M. Perkins (1819-1886) and Abigail Perkins (b.1826).
