Biographical History

Dr. Joseph S. Schmuckler, then a teacher at Haverford High School, was an early participant in the CHEMStudy Project and contributed materials to the supplementary elements.

Joseph S. Schmuckler is a native Philadelphian, a graduate of Roxborough High School. Following military service in WW II, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught Chemistry at Haverford High School from 1951 until 1968, at which time he joined the faculty of Temple University as a Professor of Chemistry and Education. He has served as president of the A.C.S. Division of Chemical Education and is the recipient of many awards including the James B. Conant Award, the Benjamin Rush Award and Temple University's Great Teacher Award. He also holds an honorary Professorship in Chemical education at the Tianjin Normal University.
