Biographical History
Abial Hall Edwards was born on 28 May 1843 in Casco, Maine. He enlisted with Company K, 10th Maine Infantry Regiment on 6 September 1861 and reenlisted with the 29th Maine Infantry Regiment in 1863. Edwards served in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and fought at the Battle of Cedar Mountain. He was also at Antietam. After reenlisting, Edwards and the 29th went to Louisiana for the Red River Campaign and then back to the Shenandoah Valley. Edwards participated in the Grand Review in Washington, D.C., after the war and served as postmaster during occupation duty in South Carolina. He returned home in 1866. Edwards's commitment to care for his younger siblings kept him from marrying Anna Conant, his correspondent throughout the war, until 1869. The couple had three children. Edwards died on 15 October 1877 in Casco, Maine.
